My Amazing Little Artists have already been hard at work this year!

My 3rd graders are taking a trip around the world this year, stopping in various countries to see what their art is like and then they are doing a project on that country's art.  So far we have traveled to Australia to see Aboriginal Dot Art! This also happened to fall on International Dot Day! Our second stop is in Mexico, we are doing Sugar Skull drawings for Dia de los Muertos.

My 2nd graders are learning about a different artist each month and then doing a project in that artist's style.  We started off with Picasso, they practiced their pencil sketching by trying to copy one of his cubism or surrealism pieces. Our second Artist of the Month is Eric Carle. We watched a quick video of him talking about his famous book The Very Hungry Caterpillar and they types of art he does.  We then start a project in his style of art. This is one of my most favorite art projects all year!

My 1st graders start off learning about What is Art?  We look at a lot of pictures of different things and decide if they are ART or not. Eventually discovering that if it is "created" then it is art! We continue on this to talk about What makes Art Good or Bad and Who decides.  I help them understand that they decide if they like it or not and thus if they think it is good or bad.  NO ONE can tell you to like or not like any particular art.  We start the year off with them by having them draw themselves, how they think they look. They get a paper with the outline of a face and they use crayons to create themselves. Our second project was with International Dot Day.  All about the Dot and learning about warm and cool colors.

Here are some pictures of what has been happening in the Amazing Little Artists classroom! *more to come!*
